So in a previous post I mentioned to ugliness of Summit County due to the fact that all of our trees are dying! I still believe that it is not the most beautiful place in the world, but my thoughts have changed a bit.
Kimberly and I went camping with some friends a couple of weekends ago and the nature of our area is much more beautiful than previously thought. Granted there are only three colors here (orange, red, and deep yellow), but they are so vibrant.
Growing up in New England has given me a bias that I will never outgrow. I do not think you can find a more beautiful place in all the world (at least to my knowledge) for the foliage season.
There are so many more colors there, but I now live in Colorado, and I am happy with where I live.
Something that Colorado does have over New England is the skiing. We have had a bit of snow here, and nothing really has stuck except on the tip tops of the larger mountains. Skiing here is amazing. I grew up skiing in New Hampshire, but I never really understood the awesomeness of the sport until I moved here last year. I am very excited for the new season and lots of free skiing...that is a great perk to working for a ski resort!

Goodreads Book List
Here is a list of the books I have read. Some are good; some are great; and some are just okay. I really don't read anything that I really don't like! :-)

THE N64!
So yesterday I was on my second of two days off…most people would call it the weekend! I just happened to have Saturday and Sunday off! ;-) Kimberly was at work and I was home alone. I ran a few errands and later that afternoon, before Kimberly’s return home, I was condensing some of our things because we have too much stuff and we need to get rid of some of it. I got rid of some books and movies and a few random things, and after that I decided to fix the reception on our TV. You see…our TV has the cable, PS2, N64, VCR, and DVD player attached to it, so the signal from the cable was a little weak on the TV and we were not getting a clear reception.
My wonderful thinking self decided…well, we don’t use the VCR much anyway so I will eliminate it from the equation. I disconnected the N64 from the VCR and the VCR from the cable. Then I connected the N64 to the Cable and the TV. It worked BEAUTIFULLY! I was very happy with myself! All was going well and then I had to push the TV back into position…those of you who know the 27” TV I got one Thanksgiving Holiday Shopping Season.....a big huge heavy beast….and that is when it happened…SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS…the TV went blank! “What the heck?” I was pissed! I pulled the TV back out and there it was….the flipping connection between the TV and the N64 was broken! The TV somehow snapped it right off…O. F. F. off! I was ripped.
The N64 was broken! Kimberly was going to kill me! It was her system and she loved it! I didn’t panic. I got my “Man” cap on and decided to improvise. I had several cable cords I was not using so I Frankensteined the N64 cable with one of the unused cords. It took sometime to pry off pieces, strip others, and connect wires with tape, but I managed. It looked horrific, but it worked…sort of. The connection was not the greatest, but it worked.
So Kimberly comes home from work and I was a bit hesitant to tell her…but I did. She said that as long as it wasn’t the N64 itself then just replace it. So I didn’t freak out for a good reason! I didn’t have to hack-up my other cable, but oh well; cables are going to be ancient history soon anyway! :-)

Where Are All the Trees?
The Rocky Mountains are beautiful with one small exception…OUR TREES ARE DYING. I was told that Colorado was one of the most majestic places in the world, and I when I arrived here last November I believed it. The winter was gorgeous and the snow conditions were the best I have ever seen, but Spring and Summer came around and half of our trees are dead or dying. We have an infestation of beetles that are destroying our Lodgepole Pines.
The diminished beauty is a minor inconvenience in relation to the potential hazard that the dead trees possess; if they caught fire, then we could have one of the worst fires in the history of our country. I am not even joking. These fires could spread across 5 different states and destroy millions of acres of land and damage many homes and communities…oh yeah, and people would surely die. The ironic thing is that the only way for the Lodgepole to disperse its seeds is for a fire to cause the cones to break open. The irony of nature!
The DNR and the people of Colorado are trying to avoid disaster at all costs. Many people have had to cut down dead trees near their property. There has been some controlled burning closer to residential areas, and we, meaning my employer and my co-workers, generally ask our guests for donations to the National Forest Association to help fund our forests projects in Colorado.
What the people of Colorado and the DNR are doing now may be a little too late. I have heard people saying that it will be taken care of or that it really isn’t that big of a deal and that other trees will take the place missing pines. They may be right, but the fact is that when I walk outside I see lots of dead and dying trees and I think to myself “How did they let it get this far?” I have been here less than a year and I may have said something several years ago if I had known about it, but it is too late. I have guests come to me upon arrival and they are amazed at how brown Colorado is. Welcome to Colorado! :-)
I am sure the beetles will eventually go away, and that things will start to look normal once again, but I moved here for two reasons. One reason was for a change of pace and a new job, and the other reason was I heard that Colorado was one of the most heavenly places on Earth. I still feel Colorado is beautiful, but honestly it is no Heaven. ;-)
